The Sugden Masterclass DAC-4 is a premium digital-to-analogue converter developed with Sugden's philosophy of "Rescuing music from technology". Rather than relying on extensive digital processing, Sugden has engineered its own conversion circuits and data-reformatting approach to produce a natural and engaging presentation that aims for a near-analogue listening experience.

A key feature of the DAC-4 is its non-oversampling design with no digital filtering, allowing the conversion process to remain focused on musicality and signal integrity. The DAC includes three S/PDIF coaxial inputs, two optical inputs and one USB Type-B input, providing convenient connectivity for CD transports, streamers, computers and other digital sources.

The DAC-4 also provides both a stereo RCA analogue output for connection to a pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier and a digital coaxial output for onward digital connectivity. A front-panel input selector and digital lock indicator make operation straightforward.

Sugden specifies a 2.15V analogue output, frequency response of 20Hz–20kHz ±1.5dB, and a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 80dB. S/PDIF inputs support 16–24-bit audio with sample rates from 32kHz to 96kHz, while the USB input is specified for up to 16-bit/44.1kHz operation.

With its carefully engineered analogue output stage, multiple digital inputs and compact Masterclass chassis, the DAC-4 is a strong choice for audiophiles seeking a refined digital front end with a distinctly musical character.
